How sugar damage blood vessels

Dr. Jelena Radovanovic Probably the most important function of a blood is transportation of oxygen and nutrients, glucose, hormones and proteins to all tissues of the body. Glucose is one of the most important substances as it is the source of energy.

Our body is producing insulin to enable glucose to pass from the blood vessels into the cells that needs energy.

If under any circumstances our body is unable to produce the required amount of insulin, the content of glucose in the blood increases which may further cause diabetes.

Normally, blood sugar level of healthy person range between 70 and 125 mg/dc and our pancreas releases insulin when our blood sugar, or blood glucose, gets high usually after a meal, for example.

That signals to our body to absorb glucose until levels get back to normal.
But if you have diabetes, your body doesn’t make insulin (type 1 diabetes in this case) or doesn’t respond to it normally (diabetes type 2).

That can leave your blood sugar too high for too long.

Over time, that can damage nerves and blood vessels and lead to heart disease and other problems.

The various studies showed that the amount of sugar, or glucose, in the blood changes the behavior of blood vessels, making them contract more than normal.

This could result in higher blood pressure, or could reduce the amount of blood that flows through vital organs.

High blood sugar is considered very unhealthy for the body; in extreme cases these conditions can even be fatal.

High blood sugar, as the main cause of diabetes, damages the walls of the blood vessels and this diagnosis may be the main cause of arterial plaque arising, which further leads to atherosclerosis.

Clogged arteries can lead to serious health events such as heart disease and stroke and so it is important to take steps to help keep the blood vessels in a healthy state.

Organs which are the most at risk from blood vessel damage in diabetes are:
  • heart;
  • brain;
  • eyes;
  • nerves;
  • the kidneys.
