Hemorrhoids are swollen rectal veins in the lower areas of the rectum and anus. When they stretch and get very thin, they cause symptoms, including pain and bleeding. The mechanism that gives rise to hemorrhoids can be mechanical or vascular. In the mechanical mechanism, spontaneous involution of the hemorrhoidal venous plexus leads to excessive laxity and displacement of internal hemorrhoids and this may be aggravated by increased abdominal or intrarectal pressure. However, vascular factors also contribute to the manifestations of hemorrhoids, given that hemorrhoids are usually inflamed.
The objectives of hemorrhoid treatment are: to eliminate mechanical and local precipitating factors, to reduce inflammation and to restore good hemodynamics.
Mechanical and local precipitating factors can be controlled mainly by dietary and lifestyle changes including a high fiber diet and abundant fluid intake which help to keep the stools soft, avoiding straining, avoiding smoking and long periods of sitting.
Inflammation is always present in acute hemorrhoidal disease. Prostaglandins and leukotrienes have been shown to be present at higher levels in inflamed hemorrhoids. Furthermore, Prostaglandin E2 and TXA-2 levels are higher during acute hemorrhoidal episodes. One medication that has been found useful for reducing inflammation and restoring good hemodynamics is Daflon.
The active ingredients in Daflon are diosmin and hesperidine. Daflon® 500 mg contains micronized purified flavonoid extracts, equivalent to 450 mg of diosmin, and 50 mg of hesperidine per tablet. Daflon® 500 mg is used for the treatment of venous diseases, including venous insufficiency, varicose veins, phlebitis and hemorrhoids. It is commonly used for grade I and grade II hemorrhoids.
Mechanism of action
Daflon has antioxidant activity through which it opposes the effects of free radicals.
Its actions lead to the reduction of vascular permeability and blood leakage into the hemorrhoid tissue. Daflon has been shown to be effective in acute and recurrent attacks of hemorrhoids.
Dosage: 6 tablets for 4 days and 4 tablets for 3 days.
Benefits of Daflon
Significant reduction in the number of acute episodes
Side effects of Daflon
There are no major side effects with the use of Daflon and there are no contraindications to its use. Its safety has been established through animal studies and confirmed via clinical trials. It is well-tolerated.
