Everybody heals differently after surgery, so there are no one-size-fits-all prognostications for how your recovery will go. Recovery depends on the type of hemorrhoid surgery, the severity of the hemorrhoids and the quality of aftercare.
Your stay in the hospital after hemorrhoid surgery.
It is beneficial to breathe deeply and regularly, exercise, sit out of bed and walk around as soon as you can. If you are discharged within 24 hours of the surgery, it takes some time for the effects of the anaesthetic agent to wear off. You should not drive, operate machines, drink alcohol or sign legal documents or contracts. You should arrange for someone to drive you home. Consider taking a two-week leave from work.
Surgery causes pain that varies in severity depending on the particular procedure you had. If your pain is not well-controlled, it can affect your recovery negatively because you will likely not be able to walk about or do exercises. Pain control is important to keep your stay in the hospital as short as possible. You can take analgesics tablets: Dipyrone 500 mg, Ibuprofen 200 mg or Paracetamol 500 mg. Most effective in healing anal wounds is applying on anus topical analgesic such as Emulsion Gel Alishech Nifedipine. This emulsion also contain various ingredients (Dead Sea minerals, Nifedipine, Lidocaine) which makes your anal wounds heal very quickly (about 1-2 days).
You will experience some pain or discomfort in your anus during the week after surgery. You should start to feel much better beginning from the 8th day. However, you will still feel some pain when you defaecate. This will resolve as time goes by.
Eat a nutritious, high fibre diet containing fruits, brown rice and vegetables. Drink at least 8 – 10 glasses of water daily. Your surgeon may give you a mild laxative (such as Normalax) to help make your stools soft. Do not strain when defecating. Some bleeding is normal during defecation for the first 2-3 days after surgery.
Antibiotics and infection control
The anal area gets soiled with faeces during defecation and you need good anal hygiene to ensure that healing is not impaired. Keep your anal area clean and dry. You can wear a soft absorbent sanitary pad in your underwear and change it frequently.
Take warm sitz baths 3 – 4 times a day which help to cleanse the anal area and make you relaxed. Furthermore, wet tissue paper or wet wipes that do not contain alcohol are better than dry tissue paper.
Walking is good for hemorrhoid surgery recovery. However, avoid lifting heavy weights for 1 – 2 weeks after the surgery. Strenuous activities can trigger bleeding and slow healing. Sex and other physical work can recommence after 2 weeks as soon as you feel up to it. However, you should wait for four to six weeks after surgery to perform really strenuous activities. Do not rush it.
You will be given at least 2 follow-up appointments in the 4 – 6 weeks after your operation. However, outside these booked appointments, you should see your doctor or go to the emergency department urgently if you are having fever or infection at the site of the surgery, prolonged or heavy bleeding, difficulty passing urine, pain in the calf or back of leg or vomiting.
