Diagnosis of Trichomoniasis

Trichomoniasis can be diagnosed in four ways:
  • Culture study – this recommended when there are no obvious symptoms of trichomoniasis;
  • Molecular biological study – this is the most reliable of all the diagnostic methods, which does not require any additional study confirmation;
  • Microscopic examination of a preparation, dyed with 1% methylene blue solution – this is the simplest method at which sensitivity indicators are not more than 60%;
  • Microscopic examination of non-colored preparation, showing the highest sensitivity in the clinically evident form of the disease.
In the diagnosis of trichomoniasis as well as other genital infections, modern medicine follows the following algorithm:
  • Gynecological examination with native smear sampling - low sensitivity (about 60%) is compensated with the low cost and high speed of getting results. If the examination reports the presence of trichomonas, that is enough to make a diagnosis.
